MTCC announces winners for 6th annual Sweet Potato Pie Contest

Mosaic Templars Cultural Center celebrated its annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, Dec. 3, which included the 6th annual“Say It Ain’t Say’s” Sweet Potato Pie Baking Contest, featuring an array of traditional and non-traditional sweet potato pie recipes by professional and amateur bakers.

The pie contest is an important annual event at MTCC that not only celebrates Arkansas’s “sweet potato pie king,” Robert “Say” McIntosh, but also honors the African American and southern cultural traditions surrounding sweet potato pie.

The competition was judged by a panel of local celebrity judges that selected first- and second-place winners in both professional and amateur categories. Additionally, the crowd had the opportunity to sample each contestant’s pie and cast a vote for their favorite to win the People’s Choice Award.

The 2017 winners are as follows:

People's Choice:

Dana Yarbough-Fluker — Scrumptious Sweet Potato Pie

Amateur Classification:

First Place, Delores Morris — The One by Dee

Second Place, Dana Yarbough-Fluker — Scrumptious Sweet Potato Pie

Professional Classification:

First Place, Kelli Marks, Cathead’s Diner — Perfectly Purple Pie

Second Place, Anne Woods, Honey Pies — Bubba’s Sweet Potato Meringue Pie
